Pod 9 From Outer Space Black Sabbath Transcript

Nick
It’s another episode of Pod 9 from outer space
Liz
Cue the music
Opening music.
LIZ
You chose this one didn’t you?
NICK
I did.
LIZ
Black sabbath or the three faces of fear.
NICK
There were indeed faces and they were fearful.
LIZ
Some were fearful. But there were a lot of faces. It was an anthology.
NICK
Indeed it was.
LIZ
I think the right thing to do is to go through the individual shorts that make it up but first I do want to ay is one of the writers was cxalled Alberto BVevelacqua. That’s Berty Drinkwater. Do he?
NICK
I think he do. If he wants to live.
LIZ
So one of the main people in this played a vampire and also presented is someone who will become a show favourite. I already love him because he’s known as THE Frankenstein. Boris Karloff.
NICK
Old Bobo.
LIZ
Bobo?
NICK
Yeah Bobo Karly.
LIZ
Is that what we’re calling him now?
NICK
It is.
LIZ
I like the way he introduces it it’s very are you sitting comfortably I’m going to tell you some scary stories now try not to be too scared. It’s like a granddad telling you bedtime stories.
NICK
Gotta make you scared before bdetime. Then you can harvest the special dreams.
LIZ
Getting you scared before bedtime is the classic grandpa move.
NICK
Like taking your false teeth out and moving them around.
LIZ
Never had that one.
NICK
It’s a classic. It’s like slushshshs.
LIZ
Gross.
NICK
That’s what it sounds like.
LIZ
The first one is the best one. The drop of water. An old woman dies when I don’t know if she’s doing a tarot reading or a one person seance but the woman that comes to prepare the body steals her ring and gets haunted is the jist.
NICK
Yes. It’s not a complicated story but it’s pretty well done.
LIZ
The corpse it looks like if you tried to make a wax figure of a face but had only ever seen skulls so you had to just guess at what a face looked like. It’s very early paleoart.
NICK
You just gotta gloop thaht skin on gloop it all oiver.
LIZ
I understand that it was 1963 and people were more easily scaerd by films but I couldn’t help laughing.
NICK
Too much gloop.
LIZ
Too gloopy.
NICK
So that was some simple fun aside from the body.
LIZ
Some very good film acting; she hid the ring in her boobs; at one point when the corpse? Ghost? Arrives in her room the cat sits in her lap because you cannot control cats. I have zero idea ifthat was actually in the script but I’m guessing not because I can’t imagine anyone thinking that’s a good idea.
NICK
I don’t know I think it’s intentional, in a lot of things cats have a connection to the sup0ernatural.
LIZ
That I get but what I don’t get is the cat just curling up on a lap of a ghost that just appeared and helping to haunt its owner cause she stole a ring.
NICK
Sounds like a cat.
LIZ
Yeah. It does. Do you know why it’s called the drop of water?
NICK
Yeah so in the english edit they took out a lot. Ikn the original she ended up around the same time there was some kind of drip going on when she stole the ring and she ends up at the end haunted by a drippi0ng.
LIZ
So0 in the end they changed the story but not the title. Poor Mario Bava. He worked so hard.
NICK
Yeah. Poor little Bavita.
LIZ
Marino, ohhhh.
NICK
That is a segment from the Mario Bava sympathy hour. Available on all good podcatchers.
LIZ
New to the pencikl paper network. But Bava is a big name in Italian horror?
NICK
Yeah, Italian horror and trash.
LIZ
Did he do a lot of Giallo?
NICK
I’m not sure the amount of giallo he did. I think he did more stuff like this stuff where it’s classic cheesy horror. He may have been a little bit involved in Giallo, but…
LIZ
He’s not the Italian ED Wood.
Bread and thread plug.
LIZ
The second one was terrible, it was the worst one as is traditional in trilogies.
NICK
Not a lot happened there.
LIZ
I think it lost a lot of plot cause according to the plot summary there’s a callgirl she’s getting calls from a former pimp who’s escaped from prison, turns out it was her friend trying to scare her but he shows up anyway and tries to kill them both. Instead, she just gets cals from someone called Frank her friend shows up to comfort her then they both get killed. It misses the key part which is the huge subterfuge thing. Also who Frank is. Some guy.
NICK
Nothing scarier than Some Guy.
LIZ
Can we talk about the set design? It was so 60s. Painfully 60s.
NICK
It was just… So much.
LIZ
If you imagine a James Bond sendup, there’s like a Casino Royale parody thing it reminded me of that the whole time.
NICK
I’ve been watching some 60s films lately including Juliet of the Spirits and all the colours popping out really reminded me.
LIZ
But this was in black and white.
NICK
It wasn’t.
LIZ
Wasn’t it?
NICK
No.
LIZ
Why did I think that?
NICK
You saw what you wanted to see.
LIZ
Trying to erase it. I cannot recommend you watch this film. Even if it did give a name to my mum’s fave band. Want to explain?
NICK
Yeah they saw they were – black sabbath were then known as Earth, previously known as some kind of vrey old fashioned blues band name which was really bad, they were trying to work out what they should actually be called and the cinema opposite was the film black sabbath. This would have been late 60s early 70s, they’d have still been playing it to get bums on seats. Got knows why.
LIZ
Well they didn’t have netflix. Or podcasts.
NICK
Not even love film?
LIZ
Nope.
NICK
Film four?
LIZ
That’s not that great. Too amny adverts.
Probably bad plug.
LIZ
Anyway. Did they see it or just go ‘ooh scary thing’
NICK
I don’t know if they saw it but they were quite squeamish people cause they would write all these supernatural things but they were actually wimps.
LIZ
I’m struggling to picture Ozzy Osbourne outside the cinema going ‘I don’t know you guys’. I’m turning into a szcooby doo character.
NICK
You’re turning into chucky
LIZ
I don’t know about this you guys. I can’t do a brummy accent I won’t try I’ll just keep saying zoinks..
NICK
Brummy zoinks. The new expressino of fear sweeping the nation.
LIZ
The last one was more of a classic kind of horror – boris karloff was a vampire, or wurdalak which is s sort of russian vampire? I’m not up on my vampires. All I know about eastern european vampires is chewing to get their teeth, in the coffin thing. But it was big empty child energy in this one. So three’s this couple who lost their kid, who died years ago didn’t just run off. the child was dead to begin with. Then the kid appears at the front door – let me in mummy I’m cold let me in. Of course – it’s the cold of the GRAVE
NICK
I’m nippy!
LIZ
And they’re like don’t let him in he’s the wurdalak, but they do anqd things go badly from there.
NICK
They do, they really do it basically turns out as you’d expect it’s an eastern european vampire story.
LIZ
There was some chasing.
NICK
Being sppoked.
LIZ
What I want to happen is a benny hill chase with a mob chasing a vampikre.
NICK
I think ik’ve seen that in scooby doo.
LIZ
The music in this was weird because it ended with an upbeat funeral march. Like der-der-der-der but happy?
NICK
It was jaunty. It jaunted. So many jaunts.
LIZ
There is’nt a lot to say about this film.
NICK
There would be more to say if they didn’t cut it to ribbons in the edit.
LIZ
Yeah like I don’t think my Italian is good enough to appreciate the Italian verison which is a shame cause it sounds a lot better.
NICK
But it was interesting to see an anthology horror film which has gone out of style over the last couple years.
LIZ
I lopve a good horror anthology.
NICK
You can see them on TV now, but not so much in film. I guess you don’t have you folloow any action longer than 30 minutes. A good evening’s entertainment.
LIZ
I guess generally a lot of films are too much about spectacle rather than making you feel things. I’m looking at you avengers. Don’t get me wrong I want trashy action sometimes so I’ll wqatch solomon kane. But most of the tiem I want to be told a good story.
NICK
I was hoping we’d get a good sztory. The first one started strong.
LIZ
It was promising that was the one that worked the most in the ENglish version. Telephone sounded promising but we didn’t get much of the plot of that one.
NICK
I liked the first one cause it was very subdued, it was close to reading a classic short story.
LIZ
What did we learn?
NICK
We learned about the wurdalack but that’s more of an actual thing. Oh yeah, if your child is banging on the door saying they’re cold, don’t let them in.
LIZ
Don’t let children in your home.
NICK
No huge mistake.
LIZ
I think on the camp scale, Karloff gets his own tent. As does the fact it’s an anthology frankly.
NICK
Karloff gets a big top.
LIZ
A circus tent.
NICK
Yesah
LIZ
I think just cause some fashion nad styles have changed a yurt for the 60s. A 60s yurt.
NICK
Just sit in there next to a camper van… Cause it’s camper van…
Long
Pause.
LIZ
So9 next week I want to watch one we’ve mentioned before and I’m very excited to watch – cat women of the moon
NICK
I am very much looking forward to cat women of the moon.
LIZ
Which I think is our first full on b movie. It’s what you’re tuning in for. This is great, black sleep is graet, but sometimes you just want some cat women on the moon.
NICK
You do. We’re cat women on the moon.
LIZ
We carry a harpoon.
NICK
But there ain’t no moon.
LIZ
So we sing a tune.
NICK
That’s it. We’ll see you same bat time, same bat channel.
Closing music.
